Greetings Members,
The Christmas decorations are up, and the end of 2023 is fast approaching. This presents us with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the events of the past year and turn our minds to the opportunities that will arise in 2024.
Several times this year, we have admired the resilience of the Gold Coast’s small business sector in the face of numerous challenges. While the Christmas period undoubtably lifts consumer engagement – the sales over Black Friday saw thousands flock to shopping outlets around the Gold Coast – it is important to recognise that these challenges will continue into 2024. The soaring cost of living has significantly increased the financial burden associated with running a small business. Moreover, the various infrastructure projects around the Gold Coast will continue to disrupt customer flow to businesses that rely predominantly on foot traffic; the most notable example being the Light Rail project. Finally, the Gold Coast’s out of control youth criminals present an unnecessary risk to small businesses. Break ins and armed robberies not only endanger the lives of staff and owners, but also their livelihoods, with the destruction of property and loss of products.
However, with the next State election scheduled for October 2024, there is opportunity for great change; by electing a new LNP government, Gold Coasters can expect these challenges to be addressed at a foundational level, ensuring the longevity of our city’s much loved small businesses.
The hot and sunny weather brought on by this time of year makes our Gold Coast beaches a stellar destination for travellers. With the weather just right, and the holiday season in full swing, our tourism sector will also be experiencing a great boost. Whether you’re a traveller or a local, there’s plenty to do on the Gold Coast this festive season. Check out the Christmas markets, carol events, family Santa photos, and of course the firework events throughout the city to help us welcome in the New Year; be sure to head out with the family and enjoy the fun!
I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Should you have any State issues you would like to discuss please feel free to contact my office on:
