Greetings Members
Winter is here, which means the southern migration of tourists to the warmer climate should help our businesses.
Over the last week I have been listening to local business owners on certain topics such as the impacts of the lightrail construction, the rising cost of living crisis and youth crime in the local community. Many owners and managers spoke passionately of the repercussions of the lightrail works, one stating “I am all for the lightrail, but the way they are constructing it is ruining business for me.” When asked whether the $325 energy rebate for small businesses would help their business, one owner laughed and said, “that won’t even cover our monthly electricity costs.” The Government needs to do more for local businesses as they are the backbone of the community and keep the economy running smoothly.
Concurrent with construction on the light rail comes the greater density of high-rise apartment buildings. Although this may appear to contribute to alleviating the current housing crisis, the strain on small businesses and significant increase in congestion on our already overcrowded Gold Coast roads is frustrating. And these are not affordable houses!
Crime is also a matter of concern for many constituents within the Mermaid Beach Electorate. Statistics from the official crime report state that ”break-ins have increased 20% in 12 months, per one hundred thousand Queenslanders… 55% of which were committed by juvenile offenders” (Queensland Government, 2024). As a result, many people are living in fear that they might be the next victim of crime. Police numbers need to be boosted dramatically, which will be a major priority for Queenslanders if the LNP gets elected the next government in October 2024.
On a much lighter note, the Blues on Broadbeach festival saw over 170,000 people attending; locally, inter-state and even internationally, people travelling lengths to be in Broadbeach to view the incredible blues artists this festival had to offer. This mainly free event was a great way to generate a sense of community and celebrate the blues artists born and bred on the Goldie. The next big event in my electorate is the Surface Festival hosted by the bright minds behind the Miami Marketta. A two-week festival starting on 23rd of June which will showcase fantastic and impactful street art. If you’re in the area, it is a wonderful opportunity to get out and enjoy the winter sunshine.
As always, if you have any State issues you would like to discuss with me, don’t hesitate to contact my office.
